description
No art can exist without vision and the courage to bring it to life. Exploring the limits of porcelain art and pursuing new creative paths has always been part of the identity of the Meissen porcelain manufactory. With the "Lionfish", the young Meissen sculptor Maximilian Hagstotz created an exceptional animal sculpture that showcases the remarkable artistic possibilities of porcelain.
Inspired by the fascinating appearance of the lionfish, whose distinctive silhouette is defined by sweeping fins and delicate structures, the challenge lay in translating these seemingly weightless forms into porcelain while preserving their elegance and dynamism. In the white version, the extraordinary quality of the modelling becomes particularly evident. Without the use of colour, attention is focused entirely on the form, the finely crafted details and the interplay of light and shadow.
The fan-like fins are especially striking. Their flowing design almost allows the viewer to follow the fish's movement through water. The entire body appears to be carried by an invisible current, gliding gently through space. The result is a remarkable sense of vitality that makes one almost forget the rigidity of porcelain.
Native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific and the Red Sea, the lionfish ranks among the most distinctive inhabitants of the underwater world. With this sculpture, Maximilian Hagstotz continues the long-standing Meissen tradition of depicting exotic animal life while interpreting it in a contemporary way. The white lionfish combines technical mastery, artistic precision and the fascination of nature in a work of exceptional expressive power.
