description
Cupid figures have ranked among the most beloved creations of Meissen porcelain art since the mid-eighteenth century. The present figure is based on a design by the sculptor Johann Pollak from 1880 and embodies the characteristic combination of grace, lightness and craftsmanship for which the manufactory is renowned. As a symbol of love, joy and the power of human emotion, Cupid continues to possess a timeless appeal.
The dynamic pose, finely modelled wings and elegant movement of the body lend the figure a vivid sense of life. For this special edition, Cupid has been entirely finished in brilliant gold. Applied by hand, approximately 2 grams of genuine 24-carat gold give the porcelain its exceptional radiance and luxurious presence.
A striking contemporary accent is provided by the tattoo motifs of the famous Meissen Ming Dragon. As one of the manufactory's most enduring decorative designs, it has been among the most important East Asian-inspired motifs on Meissen porcelain since the early eighteenth century. In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolises strength, good fortune, wisdom and imperial dignity.
In this reinterpretation, the historic Ming Dragon appears as a modern tattoo on the golden Cupid figure. The combination of a centuries-old decorative motif with contemporary visual language creates a compelling dialogue between tradition and modernity while also reflecting Meissen's long-standing engagement with East Asian artistic influences.
The interplay of precious gilding, classical modelling and the distinctive Ming Dragon transforms this figure into an exceptional collector's piece and a remarkable example of Meissen's living artistic tradition.
