description
Cupid figures have formed an integral part of the Meissen porcelain manufactory's repertoire since the mid-eighteenth century. The present figure, "Cupid with Shirt - Meissen Decorative Worlds", is based on a design by the sculptor Johann Pollak from 1880 and combines the manufactory's historic sculptural language with a contemporary interpretation.
The idea of dressing the classical Cupid figure in a T-shirt originated from the widely acclaimed collaboration between MEISSEN and the American brand Supreme in 2019. While that edition featured the iconic Supreme logo, the present version is dedicated to the origins and symbols of the Meissen manufactory itself.
The front of the shirt displays the Saxon coat of arms, from which the Crossed Swords, the trademark of all Meissen creations since 1722, were derived. The back depicts Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen, the manufactory's first production site and to this day one of the most significant symbols of its history.
At Cupid's feet lie his arrows, carefully stored in a small pouch, a playful reference to his role as a messenger carrying the fascination of the MEISSEN brand out into the world.
By combining a traditional nineteenth-century model with a contemporary design concept, this figure exemplifies the Meissen porcelain manufactory's ability to continually reinterpret its historical heritage. "Cupid with Shirt - Meissen Decorative Worlds" unites masterful porcelain artistry, brand history and contemporary design in an exceptional collector's piece.
