description
Since the mid-eighteenth century, Cupid figures have ranked among the most beloved creations of Meissen porcelain art. The present figure is based on a design by the sculptor Johann Pollak from 1880 and combines elegance, lightness and masterful craftsmanship in a manner characteristic of the manufactory. As a symbol of love, joy and the playful side of human emotion, Cupid continues to hold an enduring appeal.
The finely modelled wings, graceful pose and lively sense of movement lend the figure a distinctive dynamism. For this special edition, Cupid has been entirely finished in brilliant gold. Applied by hand, approximately 2 grams of genuine 24-carat gold give the porcelain its exceptional radiance and luminous presence.
A deliberately contemporary accent is provided by the tattoo motif placed on the figure's leg, featuring the iconic Meissen Onion Pattern. Produced since the eighteenth century, this decoration ranks among the most celebrated and successful designs in the history of European porcelain. In this reinterpretation, the historic blue ornament appears as a modern design element, creating a striking contrast with the golden figure.
The dialogue between classical modelling and one of Meissen's most recognisable decorative motifs demonstrates the manufactory's ability to continually reinterpret historic traditions. The combination of precious gilding, timeless form and the playful reference to the famous Onion Pattern transforms this Cupid into an exceptional collector's piece and a compelling example of Meissen's living artistic heritage.
