The evenly distributed, classical simplicity of the déjeuner by master modeller Emil Paul Börner (1888-1970) from 1930 is the perfect springboard for a reinterpretation of the classic. The déjeuner scheme shows various species of bird in flight - a new departure in Meissen's decorative vocabulary. Birds with wings widespread are caught in the act of landing - a white dove on the pot, a jay and marsh tit on plates, whilst a laughing thrush, an exotic species from Asia, adorns a sugar jar. The painting in this pattern is particularly elaborate with daubed clouds and richly detailed renditions of the birds. The déjeuner also impacts harmoniously on account of its colour scheme, mixing delicate blues and violets with soft pastel yellow.
