Artist and sculptor Olaf Stoy created the figurine “Mr. Beetle Dreams” in 2009, following a trip to China. Stoy had been struck by that country’s diverse Buddha figurines, which all had one thing in common: They showed a character deeply at peace. Fascinated by those depictions of contented repose and the idea of how finding one’s centre can be a place from which new things emerge, Stoy was inspired to create his own take on the Chinese style. His sculpture assumes a domed shape, with a broad base tapering towards the top. Its smooth, ample white surfaces stand in contrast against the corners, edges and sharp demarcations. When seen from the back, the figure is reminiscent of a beetle in repose, yet it remains ready to defy gravity at any moment and take flight. In “Mr. Beetle Dreams,” the figure does not long for faraway horizons, but rather dreams a private dream with an absent smile on his lips and an air of true tranquillity. The original clay model was completely reworked for this edition by Stoy, presented for the first time in porcelain.
