The mode of the vase has been created by Ludwig Zepner in the mid-1960s. The Meissen porcelain painter Ulrich Mehner designed the fanciful decorationafter a work of Otto Eduard Voigt (1870-19). Trailing flowers, humming-birds and parrots are all drawn in Meissen's famous cobalt blue. Working with these metal- oxide colours places the most exacting artistic demands on porcelain painters, since the paint is applied to the unfired porcelain and only acquires its characteristic brilliance once it has been fired. What's more, any mistakes made cannot be rectified. Producing a suitably articulate decorative scheme using but a single colour is a major compositional challenge, furthermore.
