description
Few figures embody the fascination of European Rococo with the cultures of the Far East as vividly as the so-called "Pagoda" in Meissen porcelain. Although iconographically it represents a laughing Buddha, the historic designation "Pagoda" has been preserved since the eighteenth century and remains part of Meissen tradition to this day. A distinctive feature of Meissen porcelain art is the creation of both male and female pagodas, a form found exclusively at Meissen.

The fascination with Asian art and culture played a defining role in the early decades of Meissen porcelain production. It found expression in numerous figures, decorative motifs and vessels, reaching one of its most remarkable manifestations in the pagoda figures. The "Male Pagoda" presented here was created by Johann Joachim Kaendler in 1731 and remains one of the manufactory's most celebrated creations. Standing 32 centimetres high, it is also the largest version within this family of figures.

The laughing Buddha symbolises joy, prosperity, good fortune and contentment. His cheerful expression and knowing smile lend the figure a timeless appeal. Exceptional artistry is revealed in the elaborate hand-painted decoration, featuring delicate floral motifs, vibrant colours and finely executed gilded details.

The figure also incorporates an ingenious construction that allows the head and hands to move. This carefully balanced mechanism creates the impression of gentle movement, giving the pagoda its distinctive and humorous character. To this day, it remains one of Kaendler's most iconic creations and one of the most beloved figures in European porcelain art.
