Beauty and Eroticism. "Harmonious ambivalence of transition" is perhaps a fitting description of the "Girl playing ball" by the Berlin sculptor Walter Schott. In this composition from 1897, the style of antiquity taught at the art academies is still present, yet the less rigorous elegance of Jugendstil is already clearly winning the upper hand. That the girl is shown playing an athletic game reflects the spirit of physical exercise which at the end of the 19th century started to influence the ideal of female beauty. Schott quite consciously chose the tense attitude just before she throws, to convey the beauty and erotic vibrancy of the girl. Limited Edition
