"Angel of the Four Seasons" box with cherub, H 13 cm

The little box created by the great Paul Scheurich (1883-1945), one of the most important modellers in porcelain from the first half of the twentieth century, is all about celestial harmony. Scheurich designed several items for the Meissen Manufactory as an outside artist, including pieces for a tableware service in the Rococo style such as this box surmounted by a cherub. Whereas, in Classical Antiquity, such figures of winged boys often embodied gods of love, during the Baroque and Rococo they were increasingly deployed to allegorical effect. Gently brushed onto the porcelain complete with the appropriate accessories here, they each symbolise one of the four seasons on the sides of the box. Winter carries fire, Spring a basketful of spring flowers, Summer ripe ears of corn and Autumn succulent grapes. A further little angel sculptured as the box's finial hovers protectively overhead. He was coloured by the same Meissen porcelain painter, Lydia Schrenk, who created the vessel's decorative scheme. Thus brushwork and chromatic composition yield an overall effect of utter unity - a perfect little work of art that fully deserves the broad band of gilding around its cover and rim!
