The Cat, H 16 cm

The MEISSEN® tradition of modelling lifelike animal figures was instigated by Augustus the Strong (1670 - 1733). Passionate collector that he was, he had the idea of providing his "Japanese Palace" in Dresden with a gallery of large-format animals in MEISSEN PORCELAIN®.
In 1731, the Meissen Manufactory appointed Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706 - 1775) as a second Modeller-in-Chief expressly for this purpose. Along with magnificent masterpieces such as the Macaw, Billy Goat or Fan-Tailed Peacock, his studio also produced large quantities of smaller but no less select animal figurines. Cats in MEISSEN PORCELAIN® went down particularly well with the buying public.
The figurine collectible of "The Cat" ushers in a new era of animal figures from the House of MEISSEN®. A total of six different types of pet are planned over the years ahead. They are all being modelled by Maximilian Hagstotz, whose artistic talent qualified him to study as a master-class pupil of Jörg Danielczyk.
The much-loved domestic cat can be sophisticated and gentle one moment, wild and indomitable the next. Maximilian Hagstotz's cat radiates inner peace and well-being, but also pride and contemplativeness. On an artistic level, it is characterised by the harmonious interplay of tradition and modernity.
