Chinese water bottle "Floral pattern with golden pheasants", H 24,5 cm

In a design echoing an older Chinese prototype, golden pheasants conceal themselves amongst the leafy scrolls, flowers and fruit adorning this water bottle against an intense blue ground. Otto Eduard Gottfried Voigt (1870-1949), considered one of the most productive and creative hard-fire painters at MEISSEN®, produced this consummate art nouveau pattern in overglaze cobalt blue. The spaces between motifs are washed in like negatives. Fired at high temperatures, the paint sinks into the glaze and serves as a brilliant foil to the lighter reserved decoration. Golden pheasants are regarded as symbols of affluence, happiness and beauty in Chinese mythology as well as being the insignia of the Empress. Hence, it is not merely to decorative effect that the captivating painted detail is framed by high-carat gold at the neck and base. These sumptuously broad bands effectively crown a porcelain vessel of perfectly proportioned shape and pattern.
