Little did the Versailles-born Victor Acier realise when he joined the MEISSEN® Porcelain Manufactory in 1764 that he would come to be seen as having pioneered the classicist style there. This artwork is, therefore, an allegory of the future. Acier"s classicist box is adorned by a mythological scene based on François Boucher"s "The Rape of Europa". Whereas Europa trusts the bull and is unaware of the fate that awaits her, the beholder can find out how the story ends by simply turning the box around. How imperceptibly changes can occur! That which was old is once again new. The lavish opulence of the Baroque was cast aside in the mid-18th century in favour of new design trends " including a return to models from Classical Antiquity, to straighter, more clean-lined forms " that also saw MEISSEN® go classicist.
