"Sea-life" fish vase, H 33 cm

Artist Andreas Herten pays homage to Willi Münch-Khé (1885-1960), who brought new stimuli to MEISSEN® most notably in the 1920s, by decorating a vase he designed in 1954 in a manner typical of the way the latter worked. The gifted modeller and graphic artist Münch-Khé, known for his frivolous figures of "Till Eulenspiegel", "Archivist Lindhorst" or "Peter Schlemihl", sought inspiration in the manifold wealth of Nature. There are a great many graphic works in the MEISSEN® archives depicting fanciful birds of paradise or the imagination along with all kinds of fish and sea life. Münch-Khé managed over and over again to lend them three-dimensional life on porcelain with the aid of two or three straightforward chromatic devices. Andreas Herten subtly echoes this style in his own composition. Some of the decoration serves to further enhance sculpted features whilst some is simply painted on. Fish, starfish and snails are all rendered in various nuances of red. The octopus-like fantasy animal is the only item to set a contrasting accent. Pedestal, water-weeds and coral glimmer in high-carat gold - a fitting base for the artistic delights gathered here.
