Snowball Vase, H 19 cm

Tiny, enchantingly delicate snowball flowers smother the vase, transforming it into great art. Legendary Meissen modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) literally caused porcelain art to blossom with this gracefully whimsical yet undeniably splendid Baroque decorative scheme. He first used it to embellish a tableware service that King August III presented as a gift to his consort Maria Josepha in 1739. Artists at the Meissen Manufactory have been applying these bewitching blooms to new shapes ever since. Even Frederick the Great (1712-1786) succumbed to them, ordering no fewer than six snowball vases in around 1760. The world-famous scheme of applied decoration, in which each flower is shaped by hand, luted to the vessel with a sharp knife and subsequently painted by hand, is still one of the most outstanding artistic operations performed at MEISSEN®. Branches in gilt wend their way through the floral thicket to underscore the preciousness of this consummate re-interpretation of one of the most famous decorative schemes ever produced at the Manufactory, one that will never go out of flower.
