Vase showing "Dancing nymph with veil", pâte-sur-pâte painting, H 32 cm

The French Louis Seize style, named after that King's reign, came into fashion between 1774 and 1792. MEISSEN® porcelain art was not slow to catch on, duly embracing features such as geometric shapes, garlands, meanders, medallions and allegorical attributes. Johann Carl Schönheit (1730-1805) came up with a particularly elegant item in around 1781 in the form of an oviform covered vase with snake handles. Cupids, like the cherub and dove on the back of the vase, were already popular during the Baroque and Rococo. The dancing nymph is a device from the following century. It stems from a vase motif in the Dresden Porcelain Collection and is presumed to have been created by Meissen artist Ludwig Sturm (1844-1926), who caused quite a stir at the Chicago Exhibition of 1893.
His pâte-sur-pâte style of painting makes the utmost demands of the artist, serving to lend decoration added to the coloured porcelain a three-dimensional quality. The artist applies layer after layer of liquid porcelain body with a very fine brush. This yields extremely fine texturing that conveys the nymph's veil and the flowing fall of its folds in the most authentically delicate manner conceivable. Consummately modelled snakes, symbols of seduction, slither towards the nymph. In compositional terms, the sculptural handles, relief moulding, openwork and painted decoration on this worthy vessel encapsulate every aspect of the great porcelain art Meissen has been delivering for over three hundred years now.
