A "cheers" to all days -
the history of the toast
#raisetheglasses
  • Whether it's an exuberant get-together with good friends or a delicious festive meal with the family - if there's an opportunity to clink glasses together, the right person in the group will quickly come up with a refreshing toast! It doesn't matter whether tart beer or sparkling rosé is served. It all depends on the guests! Surprise them and serve them their favorite drink from porcelain cups. Our fine white gold will accompany you through every celebration! When you raise your cups in the company of your loved ones and the Christmas goose is deliciously served on the table in front of you, all that's missing is the right toast for the noble occasion.

The words "Cheers!" are used most frequently, and in more distinguished circles the phrase is also known as "Good health!" or in Germany even "Prosit!". "May it benefit" describes its meaning, which can be traced back to an old student saying. However, if the celebration is of a more festive nature, two words are often not enough before the enjoyable toast. At weddings or round birthdays, the people of honor of the day like to make a speech before the glasses are raised. It is also common for another guest to offer their congratulations in a thoroughly formulated three-liner. We know this type of short speech as a "toast". But surely everyone has wondered where the term with the light and fluffy pastry in the name actually comes from? The explanation is actually quite simple. The English lords of the 19th century placed a piece of bread in their glass before drinking the wine. This supposedly made the wine taste better than if they didn't do so. Nowadays, we can be glad that our wines have developed so well that this tradition is no longer necessary.

Wine lovers do not have to do without their pleasure in the coming cold winter months. Mulled wine warms us up from the inside and is a real treat, especially at Christmas markets. You can also bring this cozy winter atmosphere into your home with MEISSEN! With our modern Mulled Wine gourmet set, you will receive two timelessly designed, snow-white porcelain mugs in the "Berlin" shape and an exquisite bottle of "Wackerbarths Weiss & Heiss". Enjoy an excellent mulled wine with exquisite grapes from the region around Meißen. We then recommend the toast "In vino veritas" to accompany our modern mulled wine set. "In wine lies the truth" is what these words from ancient Latin would have us believe. The people of that time are still right today. Those who enjoy a sip of alcohol can be a little more honest than they might like.
"A life without festivity is a long road without an inn."
Democritus
  • Once all the important words have been spoken, we raise our glasses and clink glasses! Today, however, it's less lively, like the people of the Middle Ages. But that's just as well. One of the theories of origin is that the toast was made to prevent anyone in the room from being poisoned. As the jugs were bumped against each other, the drinks spilled over into the next person's vessel. This caused the liquids to mix and if one of the supposed friends did not drink, it was clear that he was playing with a false face. "Cheers!" was a popular toast among knights and warriors back then. If such standard toasts become too monotonous for you, try "Gom bui", as it is called in China, or "Mahalu", as the inhabitants of the colorful island of Hawaii like to say, at your next get-together. Your fellow drinkers will be amazed and you'll have a new topic of conversation for in between!

You don't need high-proof spirits to make a toast. You can also toast with luxury drinks such as a full-bodied coffee or soothing tea. For all tea fans, we offer a simple and luxurious tea gourmet set with our white "Berlin" mug and a branded tea from BOTEANICALS. For those who prefer to soothe their soul with champagne instead of tea, our champagne set is the perfect choice! The champagne gourmet set includes a small bottle of Taittinger champagne with two luxurious porcelain champagne cups, which are lined on the inside with sumptuous gold.

Treat yourself to a luxurious break! Whether with a lavish celebration and lots of bubbly or in a small circle with tea or mulled wine - let MEISSEN be part of your festivities - with one of our luxurious gourmet sets made from the purest white porcelain!

We say "Wohl bekomm`s" (or "Good Health").
