description
Every masterpiece created by the Meissen manufactory represents craftsmanship at its highest level. For centuries, generations of talented artisans have passed down their knowledge, revived almost forgotten techniques and created extraordinary porcelain works rooted in the manufactory's historic archives and reimagined for the present day.

With the iconic reinterpretation "Queen's Gambit", a historic masterpiece first produced in 1732 experiences an unexpectedly modern renaissance. For this remarkable new creation, MEISSEN designer Lena Hensel combines the Baroque design language of Johann Gottlieb Kirchner with a dynamic and highly contrasting decoration in which sculpture and painting merge into an entirely new artistic unity. Works such as this embody not only a passion for centuries-old craftsmanship, but also the endless inspiration found within Meissen's history and its unparalleled ability to unite past and present.

A true achievement of the art of assembling porcelain sculpture, the magnificent vase form is enriched with sculptural floral garlands, while female herms and mascarons adorn the handles. The historic vessel is enveloped by a dynamic decorative concept in which two opposing visual principles meet: a chessboard pattern and a vibrant floral carpet rendered as a luminous camouflage design. Deliberately ignoring the divisions and reliefs of the form, the decoration creates a surreal and remarkably lively effect.

"Queen's Gambit" brings together the highest disciplines of Meissen craftsmanship. Painting and sculpture seem to dissolve into one another, while the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional design disappear. It is a remarkable artistic achievement to conceal sculptural elements so masterfully and to depart so deliberately from the underlying form.
