description
Deep water shimmers blue because it reflects the sky and seems to absorb its depth. The same principle can be felt in traditional underglaze painting: the cobalt blue penetrates deep into the porcelain body and becomes inseparably fused with the material during firing. This demanding technique requires the utmost precision, as every brushstroke remains irrevocably fixed and allows for no correction.
This covered vase depicts a school of powerful fish that appear to move effortlessly through a dynamic underwater landscape. In harmonious interplay, the fish follow both the rhythm of the masterful brushwork and the elegantly curved form of the vase. Aquatic plants and stylized wave structures heighten the impression of a living underwater world shaped by currents and movement.
The decoration is based on designs by the artist Otto Eduard Voigt, who devoted himself intensively to maritime motifs in the late 19th century. His expressive depictions of fish combine close observation of nature with decorative design, lending the motif a timeless elegance. The monumental vase form, created in 1912, provides an ideal stage for this impressive blue painting with its generous surfaces.
After firing at temperatures of up to 1,400 °C, the cobalt blue develops its unmistakable radiance. Beneath the transparent glaze, the finely graduated shades of blue glow with extraordinary depth, giving the composition vitality and motion.
As one of the Meissen manufactory's "Limited Masterworks," this covered vase unites the highest level of craftsmanship with artistic expressiveness. The combination of classical underglaze technique, masterful fish painting, and impressive vessel form makes it an exceptional testament to Meissen porcelain artistry and a tribute to the beauty and power of the maritime natural world.
