description
With the wall panel "The Frog Prince" (23.6 × 11.8 in), the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (Porzellanmanufaktur MEISSEN) presents a work of art that translates traditional teaching methods of porcelain painting into a contemporary visual language. Designed by Maximilian Hagstotz and executed with masterful craftsmanship by Heike Wuttke, it belongs to the two-part series "Funky Kings," in which classic fairy-tale motifs are reinterpreted.

The artistic foundation is rooted in an old teaching method of the manufactory: the Itten color wheel, in which magenta, yellow, and cyan serve as primary colors to mix all known shades. This canon has formed the basis of MEISSEN's decorative artistry for centuries. Hagstotz takes up this principle but playfully reimagines it. With calm surfaces and tension-filled details, he creates contrasts and composes a piece that combines traditional lessons in color, composition, and contrast with a modern, humorous visual world.

At the center stands The Frog Prince. His crown is more than an ornament-it hints at the hidden dignity and mystery within the animal. In the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, a princess loses her golden ball in a well, and a frog offers to retrieve it on the condition that she takes him to her castle. When she keeps her promise, the enchanted frog transforms back into a prince. The story conveys themes of inner beauty, keeping one's word, and the power of transformation, which form the poetic foundation of the artwork.

The colors, radiant and reminiscent of a court jester's costume, lend the piece a playful lightness. At the same time, Hagstotz succeeds in giving The Frog Prince both wit and dignity. The result is a modern fairy-tale image that allows the artistic tradition of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory to shine in a new, rainbow-like light.
