Meissen modeller Paul Helmig succeeded in wholly typical fashion in harmoniously fusing functionality and form in his prestigious fin-de-siècle table-clock. Organically flowing shapes and muted pastel shades in the painted decoration evocatively recall the prevailing spirit of that era. The female with face concealed surmounting the piece represents the uncertainty as to what the future holds in store. Her figure-hugging drapery has been coloured in a manner similar to that on the Bowls Player and Woman with Hoop and Rod, two familiar Manufactory pieces. The two little cherubs on the base of the clock are open to interpretation. They may symbolise day and night, or else they could be seen as representing the different ways people approach the future: some sit back patiently, whilst others can hardly wait for it to arrive.
