It was more by chance that Maria Walther stumbled across the motif of the three monkeys covering their eyes, ears and mouths. ¿Why are they cutting themselves off in this way?¿, she wondered ¿ and was thus already caught up in researching their symbolism, which is rooted in a misunderstanding. The idea that monkeys of all creatures should embody the Confucian adage ¿Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil¿ is founded upon a misreading: the negative ending in Japanese sounds exactly like the word for `monkey¿ in that language. Ancient folklore, by the way, had it that the three were spirits present in all humans whose job it was to report to God about events on Earth. The most familiar rendition is to be found in the shrine at the Japanese city of Nikko.
