description
Because people in the 18th century associated large parts of East Asia with India, they also referred to porcelain imported from China and Japan as "Indian" or "Indian-style." Augustus the Strong particularly admired the exotic floral painting on the "Indian" vase sets in his collection.
After Johann Gregorius Höroldt developed an extensive palette of overglaze colors in the 1720s, the Meissen manufactory began producing brilliantly colored decorations that even surpassed their East Asian models in whiteness and chromatic brilliance. Meissen's porcelain painters did not confine themselves to mere imitation; rather, they further developed these motifs and created independent compositions of striking decorative effect.
This palace vase presents the classic Indian-style décor in an especially vivid and expressive execution. From the foot of the vase, magnificent flowering branches unfold, climbing along its curved form and enlivening the entire surface with lush floral ornamentation. The stylized blossoms glow in shades of orange, violet, rose, and turquoise, combining with buds and finely rendered leaves to create a richly varied overall composition.
Delicate butterflies hover among the floral motifs, lending the composition lightness and movement. The arrangement appears free and natural, as though an imaginative flower garden were spreading across the vase. Characteristic of this style are the graphically stylized blossom forms and the decoration's extraordinary palette. Sketched with a fine brush and carefully painted in multiple layers of color, the motifs acquire depth, luminosity, and a richly detailed presence.
The decorated cover echoes the vase's floral motifs and is elegantly completed by a gilded finial. With its vibrant flowering vines, delicate butterflies, and classic palace-vase form, this piece embodies the fascination of Mei
