description
This palace vase continues the tradition of the celebrated Meissen Indianische Malerei. Created in 1973 by K. H. Schill, the decoration combines the vibrant imagery of East Asian prototypes with the distinctive artistic language of the Meissen porcelain manufactory. The term "Indian" was used in eighteenth-century Europe to describe porcelain decorations inspired by Chinese and Japanese motifs. At Meissen, these influences evolved into independent and highly sophisticated compositions.
A distinctive feature of this vase is the three white reserves set against a deep cobalt-blue ground, each containing a richly coloured allegory of the seasons. The hand-applied cobalt blue background and elaborate gilded ornamentation provide an elegant framework for the finely painted natural scenes.
Spring is represented by blossoming plum branches accompanied by two stylised birds. The motif symbolises renewal, awakening and good fortune. Summer is depicted through water birds among lotus blossoms and aquatic plants, evoking growth, harmony and the abundance of nature.
Autumn is represented by chrysanthemum branches accompanied by two stylised peacocks. In East Asian symbolism, the chrysanthemum is regarded as a sign of dignity, perseverance and the maturity of the harvest season.
Combining masterful hand painting, luminous cobalt blue, delicate gilding and symbolic depictions of nature, this palace vase unites traditional Meissen craftsmanship with the poetic imagery of the changing seasons.
