description
The monumental sculpture "Peacock Displaying Its Plumage" in Meissen porcelain ranks among the most significant creations of European porcelain art. It is based on a model by the renowned Meissen modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775), whose lifelike animal figures are still regarded as masterpieces of porcelain sculpture. With its magnificent fan-shaped tail, elegant posture and extraordinary richness of detail, this peacock unites artistic expression with exceptional craftsmanship.
The creation of such animal sculptures is closely linked to the ambitions of Augustus the Strong. For the Dutch Palace in Dresden, which was transformed into the Japanese Palace from 1725 onwards, the founder of the Meissen porcelain manufactory envisioned a unique porcelain menagerie. An inventory from 1733 lists several hundred animals and birds of various species, intended to demonstrate both the richness of nature and the capabilities of Europe's first porcelain manufactory. This peacock was among the figures planned for the ensemble.
The production of a large-scale sculpture such as this continues to demand the highest level of expertise. The peacock consists of nearly 40 individually modelled components, assembled with utmost precision by experienced craftsmen. Owing to its size and complexity, two specialists work simultaneously to align the body, head and plumage perfectly. Throughout the weeks-long process, the porcelain must be kept at the correct moisture level to prevent distortion or cracking. Following an extended drying period, the figure is fired at temperatures of up to 1,400°C.
Each monumental sculpture stands as an impressive testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the Meissen porcelain manufactory. Its fascination remains undiminished to this day.
