description
The monumental sculpture "Pelican" in Meissen porcelain ranks among the most impressive animal representations in European porcelain art. It is based on a model by the renowned Meissen modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775), whose lifelike animal sculptures remain among the manufactory's most celebrated creations. With its finely detailed plumage and lively posture, this figure combines artistic expression with exceptional craftsmanship.
The creation of such animal sculptures is closely linked to the ambitions of Augustus the Strong. For the Japanese Palace in Dresden, the founder of the Meissen porcelain manufactory envisioned a unique porcelain menagerie. An inventory from 1733 lists several hundred animals and birds of various species, intended to demonstrate the capabilities of Europe's first porcelain manufactory. This pelican was among the figures planned for this extraordinary undertaking.
Unlike many other animal depictions, the sculpture does not capture the moment before the hunt, but its successful conclusion. The pelican already holds a fish firmly in its beak, presenting itself as a skilful hunter in its natural habitat. For the pelican, it is a rewarding catch; for the fish, the encounter ends rather less fortunately. It is precisely this subtle touch of humour that gives the sculpture its distinctive charm and transforms it into a vivid snapshot of nature.
The pelican consists of 32 individually modelled components, assembled with utmost precision by experienced craftsmen. It combines careful observation of nature, artistic expression and masterful porcelain artistry in a work that reflects the long-standing craftsmanship of the Meissen porcelain manufactory.
