description
For centuries, chess has been regarded as the royal game, admired for its unique combination of strategy, foresight and creativity. The symbolic character of its pieces has inspired artists to create remarkable interpretations throughout history. Among them was the renowned animal sculptor Max Esser (1885-1945), who designed several imaginative chess sets for the Meissen porcelain manufactory in 1923.
His best-known and most enduring creation is the "Sea Creatures" chess set, which transforms the traditional world of chess into a fascinating underwater realm. With great artistic imagination, Esser reinterpreted the classic chess pieces as inhabitants of the sea while preserving their distinctive roles within the game. The crab embodies agility and movement, the seahorse recalls the knight, while the octopus rises with commanding presence. Starfish take the place of the pawns, reflecting their measured progression across the board.
At the centre of the game stands the royal pair of water lilies, symbolising the king and queen. The elaborately designed chessboard also reflects the maritime theme. Its gently flowing, wave-like contours evoke the movement of water and harmonise perfectly with the finely modelled figures to create a unified work of art.
The "Sea Creatures" chess set combines the timeless fascination of chess with masterful animal sculpture and the craftsmanship of MEISSEN®. It is at once a game, a work of art and an impressive testament to Max Esser's creativity and the enduring tradition of Meissen porcelain.
