Limoges painting was originally used to decorate metals with enamel. Porcelain painter Peggy Hauke needed a steady hand when building up her motif of a tiny titmouse on sprays of flowering cherry through the application of multiple layers of white porcelain paint to a black-glazed ground. Where she applied fewer layers of colour, the resultant images are virtually translucent; the way they contrast with their dark background gives rise to a captivating sense of depth. A platinum border enriches the caddy's restrained play of colour.
