Limited Edition Long-Tailed Monkey on Dish

As one of the leading animal sculptors at MEISSEN, Paul Walther shaped the genre like no other of his guild from 1904 onwards. His sculptures bear witness to an extraordinarily powerful formal language in which he brings out gestures and facial expressions in a lifelike manner. For the "Limited Edition" his historical figure "Meercat on a Bowl" from 1909 is reissued in a filigree staffage. The partial painting of the sculpture emphasizes the concentrated posture of the animal, making its body tension almost tangible. The bronze fur, hand-painted in fine brushstrokes, makes the hard, smooth surface appear soft, as if it were dense fur. Special focus of the decor lies in the expressiveness of the face: the facial expression of the animal comes out impressively and gives the figure its own liveliness.
