mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru - see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. The "3 Monkeys" are a symbol of the well-known Japanese proverb, which has been associated with the animals due to a coincidental play on words. The Japanese moral principle says that one should wisely overlook all bad things. The Meissen artist Maria Walther reinterprets this traditional representation of the proverb by placing Three Monkeys of different species on top of each other. The eyes and ears of the lower two are covered by their respective successors, completely different from traditional depictions of the "3 Monkeys". Maria Walther creates an expressive sculpture in the lively Meissen world of animal figurines. A wonderfully contemplative gift for Christmas.
