description
Made from fine MEISSEN porcelain, the "Höroldt Chinoiserie" trophy pays tribute to one of the most important artists in the history of the manufactory: Johann Gregorius Höroldt. His arrival at the porcelain manufactory in 1720 marked a turning point in style. Inspired by copperplate engravings in contemporary travel literature, he developed the famous pattern sheets, now known as the "Schulz Codex," which formed the basis for the distinctive chinoiserie designs.

These depictions reflected the romanticized European view of the Far East in the 18th century - less a reflection of reality than a fantasy of a peaceful, flourishing empire with magnificently dressed people. These exotic scenes were enthusiastically embraced in Europe and further developed in art.

To mark the 250th anniversary of Höroldt's death, the manufactory is dedicating a series of precious objects to this great painter, including this goblet. In sepia painting, masterfully executed by Katrin Hänsel, it depicts a scene full of poetic tranquility: while the woman fishes on the shore, the man - net and parasol in hand - carries the caught fish home.

Sepia painting, a special form of monochrome painting, requires the utmost precision, as all shades and spatial effects are created using just one color. The result is a vivid, three-dimensional representation that captivates the eye and reveals the virtuosity of MEISSEN painting.

Incidentally, the term "chinoiserie" did not come into use until the 19th century. During the reign of Augustus the Strong, the terms varied from "exotic" to "Indian" to 'Chinese' or "Japanese." With this goblet, MEISSEN porcelain has created a timeless monument to this art-historical tradition.
