The little cherub sits dreamily on his cushion, hands laid flat on his lap, beneath him a clear star-lit sky from within which the moon watches smilingly and wisely over the night. And here and there, tiny little stars twirl down from the cover's cobalt-blue sky like shooting stars onto the white porcelain below. The little figure and the pattern are reminiscent of Christmas, though the combination of seasonal cobalt blue, red and gold with the white of the vessel likewise conjures up visions of yuletide, of afternoons of candle-lit contemplation, of tea-time accompanied by delicious Christmas sweetmeats. The model of the "Night Sky" box with cherub is based on one designed in 1937 by Paul Scheurich (1883-1945).
