description
18th-century Chinese fashion reflected Europeans' romanticized view of the Far East: a peaceful, flourishing empire with magnificently dressed people, whose art and aesthetics were enthusiastically imitated. Johann Gregorius Höroldt's arrival at the manufactory had a decisive influence on the development of these motifs. Inspired by copperplate illustrations in contemporary travel literature, he developed a collection of pattern sheets - now known as the famous "Schulz Codex" - which became the basis for MEISSEN's unique chinoiserie.
To mark the 250th anniversary of Höroldt's death, the manufactory is dedicating a series of artistic objects such as this elegant box to its great master painter. Its sepia painting, masterfully executed by Katrin Hänsel, depicts scenes of an idealized life in distant Asia: a woman preparing tea and her husband playing the harp. Sepia painting, a form of monochrome painting, requires the highest level of skill, as all shades and spatial effects are created using just one color.
The combination of the finest Meissen porcelain for the body and robust Böttger stoneware for the lid is particularly appealing - an exciting interplay of elegance and down-to-earthness. The ensemble is rounded off by the colorful scale mosaic on the upper part of the box, which creates a lively eye-catcher.
At the beginning of the 18th century, tea was a luxury item reserved exclusively for high society. With the production of precious tea vessels, the MEISSEN manufactory fulfilled the high demands of its customers early on-a demand that this limited edition also impressively meets.
