The box with "Hummingbird and Orchids" affords a glimpse of the lush vegetation of South America. The work of art depicts two green violet-ears, a variety of hummingbird to be found in the slopes of the Andes from Venezuela to Argentina. They joyfully home in on the sweet nectar of fragrant flower-heads and we can almost imagine hearing them as they cheerfully chirp away. An emerald dealer in the coastal town of Cartagena inspired the bright green background. The box is thought to date from the mid-eighteenth century, though its creator is not known.
