In their work, Meissen's artists like to go back to Böttgersteinzeug®, the material that Johann Friedrich Böttger invented in 1707, before white porcelain, and which Meissen's director Max Adolf Pfeiffer had produced again in 1919, using the original formula. This applies to the Expressionism of Ernst Barlach, for instance, which found powerful, authentic articulation in two Böttgersteinzeug® models from the 1920s: "God the Father" and "Sleeping Peasant Couple" are milestones in MEISSEN's stock of forms that simultaneously embody the entire breadth of Barlach's mould-breaking work. The artist was inspired to produce the sleeping peasant couple in 1923 during a trip to Russia.
