Trimmings for soft furnishings such as decorative bands, woven borders, cords and tassels - known collectively as passementerie in French and Posamenten in German - enjoyed great popularity in the Baroque Age. But what was originally mere added detail assumes a new defining role: cords twined in soft flowing lines around his vases give rise to an unprecedented, very modern, diagrammatic form of decoration that yields ever-changing perspectives and lines when the vases are rotated. The tasselled cords are arranged with a certain degree of randomness and can be varied at will, thus further emphasizing the one-off nature of these Limited Edition items. The shape of the "Passementerie" covered vase dates back to an oriental model from 1721.
