This lavishly decorated double cup-and-saucer set is based on sketches by Ernst August Leuteritz from between 1850 and 1860. Resplendent in elaborate reliefs in 23-karat gold, these sorts of extensively decorated porcelain pieces are truly in keeping with the spirit of the era - a brilliant example of Rococo Revival opulence. In one version, detailed painted tulips in a variety of hues and positions together with golden leaves are painted by hand in the spaces between the reliefs. The other version features golden floral reliefs in between acanthus ornaments. The 23-karat gold ornamentation combines intricate matte and glossy gold elements that lend the opulence a subtle sophistication.
