description
Strength, elegance, and an untamed urge for freedom come together in this striking falcon group by Meissen artist Hermann Fritz, created in 1907. Two majestic gyrfalcons, among the largest and most powerful of all hunting falcons, are captured in a moment of tension. While one sits upright, surveying its surroundings with an alert gaze, its companion seems poised to take flight in pursuit at any moment.

The interplay of stillness and motion is particularly fascinating. The characteristic hooked beaks, sharp eyes, and powerful talons give the birds an almost living presence. With remarkable precision, each feather, the finely structured wings, and even the smallest details of the talons are modeled with sculptural clarity. The deliberate absence of colored decoration allows the beauty of the brilliant white Meissen porcelain and the masterful modeling to stand out with particular impact.

For centuries, falcons have been regarded as symbols of nobility, power, and freedom. Emperor Frederick II, in his renowned treatise on falconry, De arte venandi cum avibus, produced one of the most important works of the Middle Ages on the subject. For him, these noble hunting birds were not merely tools of the hunt but valued companions.

With this exceptional animal sculpture, Hermann Fritz created a masterwork that captures the aristocratic presence of the gyrfalcons as powerfully as their untamed strength. It is a compelling testament to the highest standard of Meissen porcelain art.
