In finest underglaze painting, Ulrich Mehner has captured a lively school of fish along with other marine creatures. At the center of the composition, a majestic king crab draws every eye. The flowing, dynamic brushstrokes follow the natural currents of the water, lending rhythm and vitality to the scene.

The technique itself is as demanding as it is steeped in tradition: the cobalt blue pigment is applied to the wet shard, where it sinks deeply into the surface. Only through the glaze firing does it unfold its full intensity and unmistakable brilliance. Corrections are not possible in this technique-every detail must succeed on the very first attempt.
