As one of the leading animal sculptors at MEISSEN, Paul Walther shaped the genre unlike any other of his ilk. His sculptures exemplify a uniquely powerful formal language in which gestures and facial expressions are carved in a singularly lifelike manner. For the "Limited Edition 2019" collection, his "Long-tailed monkey on dish" from 1909 is reissued in a delicate new design, in which colours are applied partially so as to highlight the animal's concentrated pose - its anticipatory body language becoming almost tangible. Applied in fine brushstrokes, the monkey's bronze-hued coat allows the hard, smooth surface to appear almost as soft as fur. Special attention was given to the artwork of the monkey's face - its meticulous detail and nuanced expressiveness lending the figure a liveliness.
