The wall panel "Still Life with Goldfinch" draws inspiration from an oil painting by Josef Lauer. The still life painter and important exponent of the Austrian Biedermeier period almost exclusively painted flowers and fruit still lifes. Departing from the standard practice of painting flowers against a neutral background, Lauer became famous for integrating his floral still lifes into a landscape - a style that is strikingly represented in this segment of the original painting. Bringing this colourful depiction to life on porcelain requires exceptional skill: after a light sketch, the in-glaze paint provides radiant, colourful accents, while a rich palette of on-glaze paints lend the image its vivid, lively appearance. A paste-grey passe-partout with gold-plated edges frames the painting and accentuate its brilliance.
