description
The monumental sculpture "Paduan Rooster" in Meissen porcelain ranks among the most impressive achievements of European porcelain art. It is based on a model by the renowned Meissen modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775), who demonstrated exceptional talent and a remarkable sense of form and movement from the beginning of his career at the manufactory. Among his early masterpieces are monumental animal sculptures such as the Macaw, Pelican, Grey Heron and the magnificent Paduan Rooster.
The creation of these figures is closely linked to the visionary plans of Augustus the Strong, who intended to establish a unique porcelain menagerie for the Japanese Palace in Dresden. Kaendler studied animals directly from nature and masterfully captured both their appearance and character in porcelain. The Paduan Rooster is particularly striking for its proud posture, distinctive crest and richly detailed plumage. The lively modelling lends the figure exceptional presence, making it appear full of energy even at rest.
To this day, the Paduan Rooster holds a special place within the Meissen manufactory as the largest painted monumental sculpture ever produced. Only the painted decoration fully reveals the richness and beauty of its plumage. At the same time, each additional firing increases the risk involved, making every completed and fully painted figure an extraordinary achievement of craftsmanship.
The rooster consists of 85 individual components as well as numerous feathers modelled by hand. Each one is carefully crafted and assembled with the utmost precision. The "Paduan Rooster" combines masterful modelling, technical perfection and exceptional colourfulness. As a symbol of pride, beauty and artistic excellence, it remains one of the most fascinating monumental sculptures created by the Meissen porcelain manufactory.
