description
Our clock depicts important events and feats in the life of Peter the Great, a man who initiated numerous reforms with the aim of transforming Russia into a modern state. Beneath a curtain in red, we behold the victorious Russian navy in a battle scene and, below that, a portrait of the tsar. A tree being planted symbolises his establishing Saint Petersburg as the new Russian capital and as a cultural "window onto the West". A further scene portrays aristocrats being shorn of their traditional beards, which were seen as epitomising the "old Russia".
