Limited Masterworks Grotesque Vase

A truly outstanding feat of modelling, this magnificent vase harnesses the full potential and intricacy offered by the then new material: floral scrolls and sprigged flowers are to be found all over body of the vase, whilst female herms and mascarons adorn its handles. These allegorical, often tonguein- cheek portrayals of deities or mythical creatures from Antiquity were popular design devices in the 18th century.

The very act of reproducing this historical vessel posed a number of challenges for Manufactory staff. The original moulds for the model were no longer usable and, as a result, new ones had to be produced - no mean undertaking, since the vase comprises a total of 97 parts. Several kiln props were required in order to ensure the vase remained upright during firing. Modelling the lid so it fitted exactly was, what's more, a veritable balancing
act for the artisans involved.

Our porcelain painters devised a completely new scheme for this vessel, which had only been produced in the white originally. A polychrome background of areas with a marbled effect and muted floral motifs painted in the early style injects an element of calm into the vase's otherwise extremely lavish design.
