Commedia dell'arte was folk theater in its most original form, which conquered Europe from Italy starting in the 16th century. Popular as it was, it also found its way into other art forms. The figures of Italian comedy made of Meissen porcelain are world-famous, and of course the motifs can also be found in porcelain painting. Here, six of them appear on a vase (baluster shape from 1730) in an opulent, Renaissance-style design. The delicate purple and gold checkerboard pattern marks the typical stage of the Commedia dell'arte, and the backdrop of Venice appears in the background.
