description
Limited to just 15 pieces and standing at a height of 39 cm, the lidded vase "Höroldt Chinoiseries" is a masterpiece of Meissen porcelain art that vividly reflects Europe's fascination with the distant and exotic in the 18th century. Through the detailed painting of Martina Szehr, the vase gains a lively expressiveness.
In 18th-century Europe, there was a veritable enthusiasm for the mysterious Empire of China. This Chinoiserie fashion permeated art, fashion, and architecture, and found expression at Meissen as well. What emerged were not realistic depictions, but rather idealized and often imaginative portrayals of Far Eastern life.
Leading this development was the porcelain painter Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696-1775), who, working from copperplate engravings, created a collection of pattern sheets known as the famous Schulz Codex. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Höroldt's death, Meissen presents this richly decorated vase as a remarkable tribute to his legacy. The vase's form itself is derived from Chinese models in the collection of Augustus the Strong, merging history and artistry in a single object.
The decoration of the vase is especially elaborate: miniature scenes of Asian life adorn the main body, while a lilac ground complements the composition. Because gold painting does not allow for shading, fine details are subsequently highlighted through engraving. The sepia painting on the vase lid demands the highest skill, as all gradations of light and shadow must be achieved with just one color to create depth and spatiality. Finally, the medallions shine with brilliantly colorful painting: elegantly dressed Chinese figures enjoying a tea ceremony outdoors, surrounded by exquisite dishes - those unmistakable Höroldt scenes that, since the 18th century, have shaped Europe's vision of the Middle Kingdom.
