description
For the Limited Masterworks Edition, Anett Gerner created a contemporary reinterpretation of the time-honoured Indian painting tradition. The term derives from a historical European designation for East Asian porcelain: for centuries, everything located east of India was broadly considered "Indian." To this day, the stylised plant motifs and mythical creatures found on Chinese porcelain from that period are still described by this term. Against a vibrant purple ground, a luxuriant floral world unfolds in finely nuanced shades of blue, white and gold. Large blossoms appear to float freely across the surface, while smaller purple flowers rise between them like soap bubbles. The edges of the vase are accentuated by ornamental bands reminiscent of the ribbons around a precious gift. Some blossoms seem to hide behind them, while others extend beyond them. In this way, the clean lines of the edges meet the uninhibited freedom of the flowers. The intense purple hue and rich gold accents give the decoration a fresh and festive character. Its remarkable depth and luminosity are the result of an elaborate process involving several intermediate firings and a total of four decorative firings. For the decoration, Anett Gerner chose the octagonal vase designed by Zhuoyu Hou, whose form references the auspicious symbolism of her Chinese heritage. In Chinese culture, the number eight represents good fortune, prosperity and harmony. The striking neck rises above a body with elegantly rounded shoulders and a foot that tapers towards the base. The eight smooth facets vary in width, causing the proportions to appear different from every angle. The result is a dynamic interplay of clear geometry, soft curves and harmonious elegance. This masterwork brings together Chinese symbols of good fortune, European porcelain history and contemporary artistic imagination.
