description
Chinese philosophy is rich in tradition and symbolism. Nothing is accidental; everything possesses meaning and purpose. The concepts of "Shang" and "Xia", meaning "above" and "below", represent the continuous flow of energy between past and future. This duality is reflected in the forms of the two vases created by the Chinese artist Zhuoyu Hou. "Shang" features a strong, rounded shoulder, reminiscent of a breathing body drawing in air and lifting its chest. "Xia", by contrast, is defined by a fuller lower body that lowers the centre of gravity, like a body exhaling and settling downward.
Echoing the forms of the vases, two auspicious dragons move between the elements. On the "Shang" vase, this mythical creature glides among the clouds, while on "Xia" it rises from the water towards the sky. Both dragons are executed in a special Meissen painting technique that creates a striking contrast between glossy and matte gold surfaces. Delicate Limoges painting highlights clouds and waves, employing a long-forgotten technique that was rediscovered only in 2013.
This exceptional work is another result of the fruitful collaboration with the Chinese artist. Created in the Year of the Dragon 2024, it pays tribute to China, the birthplace of porcelain, while celebrating the enduring dialogue between Eastern tradition and Meissen craftsmanship.
