description
Explosive, eccentric, surreal, and yet deeply rooted in tradition, this extraordinary vase playfully bridges more than 300 years of European art and porcelain history. Based on a historic vase form designed by Ernst August Leuteritz in the second half of the 19th century, David Torres has created a contemporary reinterpretation of the celebrated Toile de Jouy aesthetic. Inspired by the monochrome, engraving-like textile designs of 18th-century France, the decoration is executed entirely in a delicate violet tone. Like the historic originals, the scenes tell visual stories, yet the idealized depictions of rural French life are transformed into an unexpected and imaginatively exotic dreamscape. Particular attention is drawn to the figures inhabiting this world. The monkey pays homage to Johann Joachim Kaendler's famous Monkey with Snuffbox, establishing a direct connection to the rich heritage of MEISSEN porcelain. The hippopotamus, by contrast, reflects the artist's personal background and serves as a tribute to his Colombian homeland, introducing a distinctly individual cultural perspective into the composition. The landscape itself is equally fantastical. European flora merges seamlessly with lush subtropical vegetation, while hot-air balloons drift across the sky in place of birds. The resulting scenes are at once humorous, poetic, and delightfully absurd. Reality and fiction, past and present, Europe and South America coexist in a dreamlike atmosphere where geographical and artistic boundaries dissolve. The combination of the historic Leuteritz form with the finely executed monochrome decoration creates a work of remarkable character and originality. Blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary storytelling, the vase demonstrates how the artistic legacy of the Manufactory MEISSEN can continually be reimagined through new perspectives and creative vision.
