With the figure "The Idler", Alexander Struck created a humorous and deeply human portrayal of those rare moments when one gives oneself over entirely to leisure.
Alexander Struck (1902-1990) worked at the MEISSEN manufactory from 1918 to 1968. Trained as a modeller and self-taught as a sculptor, he developed a distinctive artistic language marked by character, vitality and keen powers of observation. Many of his designs became classics of the MEISSEN collection. "The Idler" also unmistakably bears Struck's signature style. With affectionate humour, the figure depicts a man wholly absorbed in the pleasure of doing nothing. He sits casually on a simple wooden chair, a pipe resting at the corner of his mouth and a beer mug in his hand. His posture, clothing and expression lend him great authenticity and reflect the spirit of his time. The masterful modelling is particularly striking. The relaxed pose, loosely draped clothing and finely rendered facial features give the figure an almost narrative presence. With subtle irony and great warmth, Struck portrays not a hero, but an ordinary man - and makes him unforgettable for precisely that reason. The coloured decoration, with polished boots, pipe and beer mug, further enhances the lively character of the scene.
In this way, "The Idler" combines masterful modelling, humorous observation and human composure in an unmistakable example of MEISSEN figurative art.
